Graham, McCain, Ayotte, And King Put Out Statement To Remove Boston Bombing Suspect’s Rights

A joint statement by Senators John McCain, Kelly Ayotte, Lindsey Graham, and Representative Peter King calls for a man accused of participating in the Boston Marathon Bombing, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, to be charged and handled as an enemy combatant and outside the constitution despite Tsarnaev being a U.S. citizen.

“It is clear the events we have seen over the past few days in Boston were an attempt to kill American citizens and terrorize a major American city. The accused perpetrators of these acts were not common criminals attempting to profit from a criminal enterprise, but terrorists trying to injure, maim, and kill innocent Americans.

“The suspect, based upon his actions, clearly is a good candidate for enemy combatant status. We do not want this suspect to remain silent.”

Leave it to politicians in Washington to find the mark of deviance to be in any crime that doesn’t involve “attempting to profit.” One track mind guys, there are a lot of crimes that don’t involve monetary gain.

Freudian slips aside, the most disturbing aspect of this statement is the call for an American citizen, captured on American soil to have his rights taken away. The justification given in the statement for suspending the constitution (besides the suspect not trying to make money) is that there might be more intelligence information gathered if the suspect is tortured. Not exactly an American view of rights.

“We continue to face threats from radical Islamists in small cells and large groups throughout the world. They have, as their primary focus, killing as many Americans as possible, preferably within the United States. We must never lose sight of this fact and act appropriately within our laws and values.

Except when we don’t. What happened to the rule of law? What happened to the land of the free and the home of the brave? Values no longer worth considering for some members of the legislative branch.

Would the public have even tolerated, let alone endorsed, these kinds of Anti-American views from sitting representatives before 9/11? Probably not. I guess the terrorists won as some Americans in high places are happy to adopt the terrorists’ view of politics, that there are no rules not worth breaking.
