Rhode Island Catholic Priest’s Letter Shows That We’re Winning

The Rev. John A. Kiley, a senior priest in the Catholic Diocese of Providence, recently sent a letter titled “Homosexual marriage still a lie” to the Providence Journal :

John A. Kiley: Homosexual marriage still a lie

The cascading list of politicians and professionals endorsing so-called homosexual marriage calls to mind a profound observation of the late Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen: “The truth is the truth even if nobody believes it, and a lie is a lie even if everybody believes it.”

Rev. Kiley is free to believe that a marriage between two people of the same sex doesn’t meet the Roman Catholic Church’s standards for a sacred marriage.  He’s probably right about that.  However, calling civil marriage between two people of the same sex “a lie” indicates a departure from reality.

Disapproval of a civil law doesn’t make that law a lie any more than a child closing her eyes makes the world disappear.

What’s more important than what Rev. Kiley believes, however, is that he has written a letter that amounts to a parting shot from a sore loser.  “I don’t care what everyone else says, your marriage is too a lie.  Is too, is too!”  Though its tone is mean-spirited, the letter’s very existence is another piece of evidence that the Catholic hierarchy knows they’re losing on civil marriage, even if they won’t openly admit it.
