KY Sen: Ashley Judd Won’t Run
What was shaping up to be one of the most entertaining elections of 2014 is not going to happen. After seriously examining the possibility of challenging Sen. Mitch McConnell (R), Ashley Judd decided not to run.
Judd broke the news last night on her website saying, “It would be the greatest honor of my life to be entrusted as a public servant to our beloved Kentucky. Perhaps someday I will be. However, with the help of my pastors and mentors, I have thoughtfully and prayerfully concluded that I won’t run for the United States Senate at this time.”
At this moment the Democratic Party doesn’t have any significant candidates who have declared their intentions to take on McConnell, but there is a chance Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes may enter the race now that the field is clear.
Kentucky is a very Republican-leaning state at the federal level, but McConnell’s approval numbers are not good. There is at least a long shot chance a Democrat could unseat him. This actually makes Kentucky one of Democrats’ best pickup opportunities in 2014, but that is mainly a result of how incredibly unfavorable the map is for Senate Democrats next year.
