Monday Watercooler

Hi, y’all.

The last 12 days of South by Southwest and related events finally caught up to me today. To say I don’t have much energy would be an understatement. I did my best to pace myself, but some amount of a crash was inevitable — there’s always a moment when I know I’m borrowing against my future spoons and decide to do it anyway. I just hope it’s worth it when I make the choice, and at least this time I feel like I made the right choice. One highlight?

Boomboxes held aloft at the DDP at the Texas Capitol

Participants in the Decentralized Dance Party hold their boomboxes aloft as they claim public space in the name of music.

Saturday night we danced in the streets with Tom & Gary’s Decentralized Dance Party. Here’s a crowd of well over a thousand dancing their way onto the Texas Capitol grounds. Tom & Gary’s team carry a portable FM transmitter, and then boomboxes and mobile sound systems throughout the crowd broadcast a shared beat. Though the organizers don’t encourage any overt political speech during the event, it’s a clever way to claim public space and get people out of their comfort zones and playfully into the world.

Tonight’s video is “Negrita” by Papá Changó.
