Pull Up a Chair: Memorable Movie Lines

Good morning everyone!

Surfing for movie scenes and quotes is a wonderful form of instant gratification and stress reduction. The Battle of Wits from The Princess Bride is medicinal, no matter how many times I see it. Pull up a chair this morning, and talk about some of your favorite movie lines or scenes and what it is about them that pleases or disturbs you. Perhaps it is the unseen (subcontext) in the scene that is most meaningful to you.

Although I have shared one of my favorite death-by-blunder scenes, the other is the Wicked Witch of the West, melting. (Incidentally, Margaret Hamilton was badly burned during a scene in which her character ‘vanished’ in a burst of flame and smoke. A delay in activating a trap-door left her exposed to the pyrotechnic device. Her stuntwoman was also injured in a scene involving a smoking broomstick. Buddy Ebsen, originally cast as the Tin Man, complained of lifelong lung issues caused by an allergy to the aluminum dust used for his Tin Man makeup.) Do you have a favorite death-by-blunder scene? Maybe you have always wanted to play a part in The Wizard of Oz (or something else), and if so, talk about what part and why.

Sir Anthony Hopkins improvised the unforgettable ‘hsssssss‘ sound in Silence of the Lambs. Likewise, Bogart’s line to Bergman, “Here’s looking at you, kid” was not in the script, nor was Nicholson’s ad-libbed line, “Here’s Johnny!” in The Shining. Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) is more than the cold-hearted head of a powerful Italian mob family. That trait shows when he sentences a man to be beaten as retaliation for the beating of another man’s daughter – all while gently stroking a cat. Thing is, the cat was never part of the script. Do you have a favorite unscripted movie scene?

If you like courtroom scenes, when did you laugh yourself sick during a courtroom scene, or what scene surprised you? Share your favorite rich people movie scene where the entrance way has checkered or expensive tile. How about your favorite trying-to-leave-but-the-car-won’t start flick (this one was based on true events), or your favorite He’s-Still-There scene? Can you remember wondering how on earth it was possible for actors to keep a straight face while filming a scene? Or not. These guys didn’t.

Many people have applied the line “I have a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore” to a variety of situations in everyday life. For me, the line “There’s no place like home” has a sadness about it, because ‘home’ is a place I can never go again. Has a short film or a scene from a film ever left you in tears? What is the best documentary you have ever seen, that you never want to see again?

If you only remember part of a quote, but cannot recall the scene or the movie, try typing “IMDb movie quote” into the Google search box, along with the bit you do remember. For example, when I type, “IMDb movie quote you’re a monster zorg,” I can find this scene. When I type “IMDb movie quote I see you’ve met my faithful,” I can locate this scene.
