Friday Night (Intermittent) Random Ten

Because I’m in the mood which is reason enough:

Primrose Hill – St. Etienne
Bar All The Doors – Big Harp
Friend of the Night – Mogwai
(Every Time I Turn Around) Back In Love Again – L.T.D.
Murdera – Sublime with Rome
Lightning Strikes (Not Once But Twice) – The Clash
I Guess The Lord Must Be In New York City – Harry Nilsson
Love & Communication – Cat Power
It’s Real – Real Estate
I Can Feel A Hot One – Manchester Orchestra
and the extra one: Arbeit Mach Frei – The Libertines

So one night last week I was watching Julian Schnabel’s messy Berlin, documenting Lou Reed’s 2006 six-night stand a St. Ann’s Warehouse where Reed performed his (also a bit of a mess) Berlin album. It was uneven affair due in no small part to Schnabel’s hamhanded attempt to weld his his visual interpretations onto the narrative flow of the songs.  But nothing else was on the teevee that night and I was too lazy to pick up a book (I’m currently reading The Man In The Empty Suit which presents its own challenges) so, watch I did. I was about to give up on the film and go to bed when the band came out for the first encore and, well, I had never heard Antony Hegarty of Antony and the Johnson’s previously, and I was completely knocked over by his duet with Reed on VU’s Candy Says. Antony’s voice is an acquired taste (not that Reed’s vocals have ever been a walk in the park) but together, in light of the topic and “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” longing and wistfulness of the song, it is equal parts stunning and heartbreaking. The added bonus comes at the conclusion with a close-up of the normally stone-faced Reed where he looks like he can’t make up his mind whether to smile or cry.

Anyway, I’ve been thinking about it all week, so here it is:

You can go here to see Antony and the Johnsons live version.

You’re welcome.
