Vatican’s pragmatic chief exorcist: “Usually the parents call concerned about a child who won’t go to school. The real diabolical phenomena.. are very rare.”
All credit to Monsignor Angelo Mascheroni, the diocese’s chief exorcist since 1995, for keeping a firm sense of perspective while handling the Vatican’s numerous phone calls, from those reporting demonic possession. The Catholic Church in Milan has had to instal a hotline to deal with the high volume of suspected ‘diabolical phenomena’ – and to ensure that unqualified fraudsters don’t try to dupe people into an ineffective, two-minute exorcism. The Vatican’s current chief exorcist should be commended for his realistic world view, especially relative to his predecessor who believes the practice of yoga is satanic, as well as, naturally, reading ‘Harry Potter’ novels.
