Election Victory, Use it or Lose it, Push for one clear change this Lame Duck Congress

There was amazing change. Suddenly far fewer thinks pot and gay marriage will destroy us. Dramatic shift in the Orthodox Jewish vote toward Democrats. Cuban-Americas according to some polls voted for Obama, or if it was a tie still dramatic change. The only group who call themselves Conservative that won anything to cheer about was the Ron Paul faction of the Tea Party in the House.

Where they agree with Progressive is that they want to end the war, close foreign bases, and end the embargo of Cuba,

Progressives tend to think Cuba and Military Bases can wait, even peace for many is on the back burner, while preparing to debate Social Security and the debt. Some young folk might not even realize that there is a blockade of Cuba, and that Americans once were very mad that their government would tell them where they couldn’t travel.

If instead of quickly signing an on-line petition and moving on to other matters, I would suggest that it be the priority. Even if a Lame Duck Congressional vote to end the blockade or a US base in Europe fails, it would be a good start to next years debates on Congressional cutbacks. It is best to work on, where there is more agreement, then wait to fight over domestic issues.

Miami Cubans booted out two pro-embargo Republicans, and some polls said voted for Obama, maybe the exit polls where Obama won checked off a box on a piece of paper while where he supposedly lost involved publicly speaking into a microphone.

I would suggest giving $10 to every elderly Cuban-American who told a friend (and give the friend’s name), that she avoided the exit poll taker because she didn’t want to publicly offend her pro-embargo relative, or who she thought were still pro-embargo neighbors.

The Council for a Liveable World won every hotly contested Senate races but two. However, Shelley Barkley of Nevada sometimes seemed to me to be a bigger hawk then her opponent,
And Richard Carmona of Arizona lost to the top opponent of the Cuban embargo in the US Senate. Carmona had the support of local Latins, but I say again peace won even when the peace activist and Black Latin coalition lost.

The Islam haters lost big. That porn movie, baiting Islam, convinced Americans that Islamophobes are troublemakers rather than prophets warning about national security, but the US political climate could change again if we don’t seize the moment.

But we better watch out, al Qaeda is sitting around waiting for the West to collapse or helping it do it, such as placing explosive-laden people on airplanes that could have even been a dud so as not to risk a resuming the draft, a far cheaper way to fight, and they will be hopping mad if it looks like the dollar is not going to collapse after all. In their eyes those who borrow like crazy like the West does must suffer destruction for it. Let’s prove al Qaeda wrong by straightening up in a hurry.

Anyway Cuba can be counted on to make positive changes if a Congressional vote to end the embargo looms this Lame Duck secession. People in Afghanistan could care less about making US peace-activists look good.

If we wait until our soldiers have to wonder if their next paycheck will be on time, to leave Afghanistan, it could be confusion and chaos.

If we can end the embargo on Cuba and close one military base this lame duck session, it will give me hope that the West may not collapse after all.

Britain is still around, two centuries after the US revolution, the US, with the proper compromises might be around in another 200 years as well.

Late Late Night FDL: Riding With The King

I'm retired in Philadelphia. Non religious but there seems to be a life force that I see as more personal than is usually expressed.

I was raised a Quaker (common with Christian Jewish intermarriage back them) But my father was a total pacifist and during World War II, at the time that being so was difficult.

Upbringing included father trying not to get physical, yet still defend us kids from my harsh stepmother until she got her citizenship papers, after which they could get divorced. Been involved in peace issues since the anti-fallout shelter protests through Vietnam and Iraq.

I wrote "Greedy Little Squirrels and Lifeboat ethics,” 1977, when the Moonies were coming to America and got heavily harassed by them. I also think bin Laden is extremely dangerous like the leader of a barroom brawl, who has been manipulating this country into using the US to get Muslims angry enough to join his suicidal permanent war group. Before 9/11 young Muslims rebelled by wearing by covering their hair a little less than expected and at least winking at each other, now he changed rebellion into being militancy. The Northern Alliance would have been legitimately in charge long ago had he not baited the US into entering Afghanistan.

Obama is making a mistake in my mind with how to stop bin Laden’s dream of permanent war in a divided world but less of a mistake than most anyone else would. If due to currency collapses from out ever more expensive weapons the US stops fighting al Qaeda, then other counties will. If it ends up being Iran, the Sunni Shiite divide will be enormous. Al Qaeda is already convinced that the atheist China is a serious enemy, and the Russians have fought for brutally and inadvertently convinced far more Muslims than the US did that they considered Islam itself to be the enemy.

I never stopped supporting Jimmy Carter when everyone turned on him and I support Obama as well, but think he will have to use a lot more persuasion and less force if they aren’t going to succeed at bankrupting us. However Obama has tried less force and al Qaeda has started to respond in kind trying to limit the victim’s in the way of their primary attacks.
