Good morning. Have you guys ever had trouble sleeping? Do you sometimes have to get up at night to answer nature’s call and have trouble dropping back off? That happened to me Tuesday night. I got up and it was 2:22 am. I used the bathroom and then laid back down and closed my eyes….and then laid there. And laid there. And laid there. No matter how I tried, I just could not drop back off.
Whenever that happens, I refuse to look at the clock to see how much sleep I’m being deprived of. I have to get up for work at 5:10am in order to get my shower, eat, get dressed and out the door before the traffic becomes too horrible. I usually go to bed around ten or ten thirty so there isn’t a lot of time to waste trying to drop off and normally it doesn’t take more than a few minutes to do so.
So early Tuesday morning, there I was, lying in bed, trying to drop back off. I tried to calm my mind, then I read until my eyes were tired, I even tried counting sheep. I may have gotten a bit dozy toward the end of the night but that wasn’t true sleep, just the gray, hazy area of not quite conscious. Too soon my alarm went off and I had to drag myself out of my bed and get going. Needless to say, I was pretty blah all day long.
Since then, I’ve been sleeping like a baby and normally I’m not insomniac but every now and then something prevents me from sleeping and the events don’t seem to have a common denominator except for the sleep deprivation itself.
Does that ever happen to you and if so, is there a method you use to get some winks? I’m not into narcotics or over the counter sleep aids at all. Once I tried reading an automobile owner’s manual to bore myself to sleep but all I got were red eyes. Sometimes I just can’t mentally shift the gears from wake to sleep. Also I never use caffeine or other stimulants so it’s pretty unlikely that’s the cause. This is also not a recent phenomenon as I remember school days after one of my rare, (but frustrating), sleepless nights.
