What a waste of cash. Of course I really don’t care if Brian Brown wants to shoot his organization’s wad trying to urge North Carolina voters to come out to vote against President Obama in the fall. The National Organization for Marriage has spent $34,000 to run an ad on radio stations here in the Triangle (a region that voted against Amendment One, and had its large black populace vote overwhelmingly for Barack Obama in 2008).

Rev. Patrick Wooden, Pastor of the Upper Room Church of God in Christ in Raleigh is the professional anti-gay local bible-beater-for-hire (the black face of Amendment One). He’s the cat who infamously said on the air to Peter LaBarbera that I needed to find Jesus and a man to breed with to ‘rock my world’. He’s the pastor of choice recruited by Brown to read this script.

African Americans proudly celebrated Barack Obama’s historic election as President in 2008. It was the African American community that helped him win here in North Carolina. But President Obama has turned his back on the values of our community with his strong endorsement of the homosexual movement. We worked hard to pass the marriage protection amendment this past May. With the strong support of the African American community, the amendment protecting marriage as the union of one man and one woman passed overwhelmingly. The very next day, President Obama came out for homosexual marriage. Now his campaign leaders are working to deny North Carolina’s ability to define marriage, and they want to overturn our state marriage amendment altogether. Join me in saying ‘no more’ to President Obama.

Wooden has seen himself media go-to figure since the Amendment One push; he is not a figure of any stature or respect in North Carolina politics. He puts on a sad clownish display of self-promotion for local media and doesn’t help his case by uttering extremist flaming crap of the highest order on the air. The GLAAD Commentator Accountability Project (#glaadCAP) features “the best of” Wooden on its site. Some tidbits local media never seem to ask Wooden about – he:

But there he is, the go-to guy for NOM. About the only winners in this latest ad charade are 1) the radio stations in the politically Blue Triangle area that will bank NOM’s dough to air the tripe, and 2) Wooden, who pimps his ‘life-earned,’ non-academic doctorate, gets more exposure.

What’s truly offensive — and right in line with NOM’s documented race-baiting strategy — is the naked appeal uttered by Brian Brown:

“The goal of our advertising campaign is to issue a wake-up call to the African American community in North Carolina that President Obama does not represent the values that they have fought to protect,” said NOM president Brian Brown in a statement. “We urge all North Carolinians to join Dr. Wooden in rejecting the anti-family policies of President Obama this November.”

Never mind that “the black community” isn’t monolithic, how clued-in to the needs or values of minorities is white-bread, Beltway Dominionist Brian Brown, for god’s sake? Scott Wooledge over at DKos:

You know, I’m just sure there is nothing the African American community of North Carolina appreciates more than getting a wake-up call from a wealthy, white, Catholic K-Streeter from Connecticut like Brian Brown. I’m sure they’ll thank you for it.

Rev. Dr. William Barber of the NC NAACP made it clear in his open letter to North Carolinians that no one was being fooled by tactics used by the right wing elements in the state that NOM beds down with.

The real insult to the Civil Rights Movement is that same regressive ultra conservative tea party type folks suing to overturn the 1965 Voting Rights Act, which many historians consider the most important achievement of the Civil Rights Movement, re-segregate and rob our public schools of valuable resources, block workers’ rights to organize, force us all to get photo ID’s to exercise our right to vote, cut back on the time to vote, and repeal the Racial Justice law, now somehow think the sons and daughters of the Civil Rights Movement can’t see through their Trojan Horse trick.

The ultra-conservative sponsors push their anti-gay amendment with one hand, and their restrictions on our voting rights with the other. They would write discrimination into our Constitution with one hand, but violate it by withholding enough funds for children to get a sound basic education.

Brian, keep wasting your money trying to persuade black voters here. North Carolina is now a toss-up state trending Obama and the issue here is about get-out-the-vote. Patrick Wooden bleating day and night won’t convert black votes in this market for Mittens.
