Romney, Hologram Ronald Reagan, First-Term Tax Assessor from Hannibal Call on Todd Akin to Leave MO-Sen Race

My point being that virtually the entire Republican side of the ledger has now demanded that Rep. Akin drop out of the Senate race, for nakedly political reasons. Mitt Romney has just recently joined the fray.

But it doesn’t look like any of this will matter, at least not today. Akin has until 5:00 Central time to drop out, and he’s currently on Sean Hannity’s radio show telling a beleaguered Hannity that he’s in it to win it.

Aside from everything else, this does show the fecklessness of the GOP establishment. This is probably the most aggressive I’ve seen them in years in trying to punish one of their own. They remember well the ghosts of Delaware and Colorado and Nevada in 2010, three Senate seats well within their grasp that they allowed to slip away because of extremist candidates. And they can’t actually do anything about it. Akin won the upset in the primary as a Congressman appealing to the outsider fringe. That theocratic leg of the Republican stool continues to prop him up with support. Anti-choice groups have been running ads asking for Akin donations all week. And so the vaunted party establishment, even with the support of the outside groups like Karl Rove’s Crossroads GPS, cannot lay down the law. The monster is out of the box. Not even their Presidential nominee can do anything about it.
