Gov. Bev Perdue – Amendment One: Wrong for NC Families

The governor of North Carolina, Bev Perdue (D), is not seeking re-election. Prior to her decision she was quite timid about speaking out against the amendment in terms of the harm it would cause gay and lesbian couples — couching her major opposition to it in terms of its effect on business. In fact, she sadly reiterated her own personal support for one-man, one-woman marriage in her initial statement back in October.

So, with nothing to politically lose, she is bringing her opposition to Amendment One full force.

I want to talk to you about why I plan to vote against Amendment One.

This proposed amendment could harm women, children, families and businesses across North Carolina.

I have posted a video outlining some of the ways Amendment One is wrong for all of North Carolina.

On May 8, I’ll be casting my vote against Amendment One. I hope you will join me.

But personal opposition to marriage equality is, again, a personal matter, it should not be public policy or lawful to discriminate. As we have seen, progressives to hard-line conservatives have come out against this Amendment, even activist David Blankenhorn, who was a primary witness in favor of Proposition 8 in California, mind you.

The proposed amendment states that “marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this state.” That’s a big mouthful, and it goes well beyond the issue of same-sex marriage.

For one thing, it means that North Carolina could not, now or ever, take any step or devise any policy to extend legal recognition and protection to same-sex couples. No domestic partnership laws. No civil unions. Nothing.

That’s mighty cold. If you disdain gay and lesbian persons, and don’t care whether they and their families remain permanently outside of the protection of our laws, such a policy might be your cup of tea. But it’s not our view, and we doubt that it’s the view of most North Carolinians.
