New Occupy Atlanta Encampment at AT&T

Lt. Dan Choi is on his way to Occupy Atlanta’s new encampment in front of AT&T headquarters right now.  He’ll be in Atlanta for the next 3 days to celebrate the tent that Atlanta won for their outstanding local activism from Occupy Supply.  Margaret Cho will also be joining Dan at the tent, which will sit next to the historic black church that the Occupy Atlanta folks saved from foreclosure and eviction.

Today also kicks off our FDL Membership drive.   The annual contributions of our members pays for the salaries and benefits of our employees who do the organizational work, and that’s how we were able to use 100% of the money we raise through Occupy Supply to get supplies to occupiers who needed them.  We raised over $200,000 to purchase and ship over 18,000 cold weather items, the retail value of which was many times what we paid for them.

Many occupiers have told us that without the help they received from our local member liaisons and Occupy Supply they would not have been able to make it through the winter.  And we know that many, many more were able to protect their people and lift their spirits because we were there.  By having our local member liaisons on the ground in regular communication with the encampments, we were able to get help quickly to occupations when they needed it most.

We knew that if the Occupy Wall Street movement could make it to the spring that it would bloom again.  And far from being “crushed” by Homeland Security, the encampment as a symbol of protest seems to be taking on a whole new life.  Retired employees have been camping out in front of Century Aluminum in West Virginia to protest the company’s decision to cancel their health care benefits — and they’re winning.

Over the course of the next few days, Dan Choi will be traveling to encampments across the country to honor those who refused to let Occupy die.  We’ll also be here asking for your support for the Firedoglake Membership Program, because Occupy isn’t going away, and Occupy Supply will continue to anticipate the needs of occupations across the country and be there to help them when they need it.

The FDL Membership Program is what makes Occupy Supply possible.  If you’re already a member we thank you for your continued support, and if you’re not, we hope you’ll consider joining and  helping out your local occupation through Occupy Supply.
