Romney Won Nevada Caucus with 50 Percent of Low Turnout

The Nevada Republican party has finally certified the results from the Nevada caucus that took place on Saturday. Mitt Romney was able to win the caucus with 50 percent of the vote. Newt Gingrich came in second, Ron Paul took third place and Rick Santorum came in last. From the Nevada GOP:

Nevada Caucus
February 4, 2012
100% reporting (1800/1800)

All Candidates
Romney 50.0% 16,486
Gingrich 21.1% 6,956
Paul 18.7% 6,175
Santorum 9.9% 3,277

This was a big victory for Romney, but the media impact of it for the Romney campaign was diminished by the fact that the Nevada GOP was so incredibly slow in counting.  The final totals weren’t released the same night or even by Sunday morning.

Interestingly the turnout this year was significantly down from 2008. Last time just over 44,000 people voted in the GOP caucus, while this time just over 32,000 votes were cast.
