Peter Wehner’s Selective Culture Of Life

First, a personal anecdote…

Yesterday I spent the day with my mother, brother, and sister going out to lunch and just sitting around talking. During the course of the conversation, my mother asked me who “this Rick Santorum” person was. In so many words I explained that Santorum is a hardcore Catholic (a religion, I should note, I was raised in.. St Brigid’s represent, yo! to say nothing of the fact that my daughter attended Catholic schools from fifth grade all the way through college) who is virulently anti-gay, anti-abortion, and was a two-term incumbent Senator who got his ass handed to him in 2006. I also brought up how, on that election night, he was giving his concession speech on national TV while his youngest daughter was having a meltdown standing in front of the Santorum family and nobody noticed, busily manifesting as they were, all five of the Kubler-Ross stages of grief on their faces. My wife was watching upstairs and kept telling me “you gotta come see this! Why doesn’t someone in the family get her off the stage? This is awful.”.

Hence the picture was born…

I then told my mom the story (in a  straightforward manner – very unlike me, I might add) about the Santorums decision to take the 20 week-old miscarried fetus Gabriel home to the Santorum kids to hold and have their picture taken with him. I swear to Jeebus that I was very nonjudgmental in describing the whole affair, leaving it to my mom to form her own opinion.

Which was, and I quote, “That’s just weird… I mean, if I was even going to vote for him I wouldn’t because… that’s just weird.” For those who don’t speak 82 year-old nice Italian mom lady, what she said was… “That’s seriously fucked up.”  My sister chimed in with a much more succinct, “That’s just sick”.

Now we have Peter Wehner taking time out from writing his usual wingnut welfare drivel at Commentary to have a kitten over the fact that people are more than slightly creeped out at the idea of forcing a 6, 4 and 1 1/2 year old to snuggle and pose for pictures with a dead baby.

We are seeing how ideology and partisan politics can so disfigure people’s minds and hearts that they become vicious in their assaults on those with whom they have political disagreements. I would hope no one I know would, in a thousand years, ridicule parents who were grappling with unfathomable human pain. Even if those parents were liberal. Even if they were running for president and first lady.

The third point is it tells you something about the culture in which we live that in some quarters those who routinely champion abortion, even partial-birth abortion, are viewed as enlightened and morally sophisticated while those grieving the loss of their son, whom they took home for a night before burying, are mercilessly mocked.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you the times.

Ladies and gentlemen I give you …. Peter Wehner, who called 9/11 the “greatest moment” of George W. Bush’s presidency.

And the Peter Wehner who excused the invasion and destruction of Iraq by lying and saying that Iraq was “divided, traumatized, and collapsing” before we went in there and divided, traumatized, and collapsed the shit out of it.

So I guess you’ll have to excuse me if the moral teachings of a genocidal fuck like Peter Wehner leaves me unmoved although I may be inclined to listen to him someday.

Possibly after he eats a bag of salted dicks and chokes on each and every one of them…
