Just One Of the Many Diverse Faces of the 99% in Denver

Just One Of the Many Diverse Faces of the 99% in Denver

It was perfect weather to stretch your legs and assert some rights Saturday here in Denver.

And about 2,000 other people besides myself and Mr. B thought so too. I was very pleasantly surprised when he started charging his camera Saturday morning and asked “when does that thing start?” He doesn’t have the same zeal I do for going to protests; and let me just say if the Occupy movement has gotten his attention, there is really some Occupy power in the zeitgeist now.

We got there about 11:00 as I wanted to talk to the occupiers for a while before the Rally and March scheduled for 12:00. The Occupiers had a very tough week starting the 15th. There were nightly arrests beginning that Friday and all week long until the 21st.  I was particularly interested in the folks who run the Thunderdome – the food center of the Denver Occupy. The Thunderdomers were specifically targeted and pepper sprayed on the 15th.

There has been some tension, a bit of fracturing since those arrests. I think some of that is to be expected as a result of the huge power of the State of Colorado in the form of the Governor, the Mayor and the Denver Police Department, and how they have been trying to smash the movement here. (There’s a petition calling for the halt of arrests, with well over 10,000 signers at this point.  It may have had some effect as there were no arrests Friday or Saturday night.)

But there’s more than just that natural tension.  [cont’d.]

The New Thunderdome - Folding Table

There has been some tension, a bit of fracturing since those arrests. I think some of that is to be expected as a result of the huge power of the State of Colorado in the form of the Governor, the Mayor and the Denver Police Department, and how they have been trying to smash the movement here. But there’s more than just that natural tension.

Carrie (the woman at the Thunderdome table above) told me that “Look there’s a bunch of egos and political types trying to become leaders of a leaderless movement; that’s why we said, you know, do your thing, we’re still going to care for and feed the Occupiers. And when push comes to shove, what the Occupiers will do is defend the Thunderdome.” I totally believe her. I left it at “tell me what you need. We’re working on fundraising 100% for needs.”

I was wearing my FDL T-shirt. I went to the Occupier table looking for a media person to talk about the OccupyFund. We talked for a bit, and about all the different kinds of folks that were there. The Ron Paul folks, etc.

She said “And I have a problem with them. Anybody who calls for small government but wants to crawl up into my uterus I have a problem with.”

This person obviously did not get the 99% memo. If you would have told me 6 months ago that Mr. B would be marching on the Federal Reserve I would have laughed in your face! Everybody’s Venn Diagram is crossing on the no-demand, no-partisan premise, and departing from that is sheer folly if you ask me. My money is on the Thunderdomers and their tried and true #OWS leaderless, agenda-less methods.

Anyway, we were there to March! Here’s a picture and video collage: (more…)
