Hennepin County Sheriff Stages 1:00 AM Raid, Steals OccupyMN’s Tents
There is a difference of opinion among the civic leaders of Hennepin County when it comes to OccupyMN. R.T. Rybak, the Democratic mayor of Minneapolis, likes it; Rich Stanek, the Republican Sheriff of Hennepin County, does not.
So the fact that the protesters are camped at Government Plaza, in front of the Hennepin County Government Center, means that they are at the questionable mercy of Sheriff Stanek — and a little over an hour ago, Hennepin County officers moved in and took away the Occupiers’ tents. (Go to the livestream to follow this as it unfolds.)
The Occupiers are currently discussing whether to stay at Government Plaza or to move to a city-owned site, where Stanek can’t harass them. More as it happens.
UPDATE, 10:42 AM: Well, well. Turns out the one person arrested in all the hoo-ha, Melissa Hill, is a known critic and lampooner of Sheriff Stanek. Oh, and she was arrested far from the tents that raised Stanek’s ire. Gee, what a coincidence!
Oh, and anyone interested in feeding the Occupiers? Instructions can be found here.
