In a state which is not totally anti-gay but doesn’t exactly roll out the red carpet either and whose Senator John McCain has gone on record saying ,”I think that we’ve proven that both parents are important in the success of a family, so, no, I don’t believe in gay adoption.”, you wouldn’t expect a gay couple who have adopted 12 kids to possibly be the next big hit in reality TV.
Steven and Roger Ham of Phoenix, AZ were featured in an Arizona Republic newspaper article back in May and soon thereafter the calls starting coming from Hollywood about appearing in reality shows based on their experience as a gay couple who have through foster care managed to amass a family which would send shivers down the spines of even the most ardent parents with multiple children.
But as Arizona Republic reporter Karina Bland writes today a production crew followed the 2 plus 12 family in August shooting 20 hours of video with hopes once edited Oprah Winfrey will be interested enough to order a reality show for her OWN network.
Steven and Roger have been partners for 18 years and having wanted to have a full and complete family became foster parents and eventually adopted 12 of the children they cared for against the odds where lawmakers have tried to make it illegal for singles to adopt including gays and lesbians. But they persevered and the phrase “with 12 you get egg rolls” has a whole new meaning.
I hope this reality show comes to be, not only will it provide I’m sure great entertainment but give a platform which shows that a family isn’t made up of just a man and a woman with children but comes in all varieties of family love.
