Below is the July employed percentage of the population from 1960 to 2011 – seasonally adjusted.  The take away is that our high unemployment is not caused by too many workers,  it is too few jobs.  Bush/Greenspan and the GOP’s no regulations, no tax law enforcement to prevent jobs going overseas, has been a disaster. Clinton’s 64.2% looks very good these days – but he had high tax rates, didn’t he? When will the GOP learn that high tax rates do not mean no jobs – indeed it is the opposite as long as you enforce the tax laws and have tax rates high enough to influence corporate decisions..  As for Obama and his jobs agenda – it is hard to see the recovery in this annual data (or in the monthly data).  And post the debt limit deal things will get worse because Obama does not have the guts to let all Clinton rates return, despite his ability to pass new tax rate cuts after the Clinton Tax rates are automatically restored.  Indeed his corporate masters will not allow him to be to the left of the GOP.
