John McCain Claims Americans Prefer Government Default Over Tax Increases
It’s Sunday, so that means John McCain is on the teevee — and for once, he pretty much nailed it.
The Tea Party does not want Republicans to compromise on their opposition to any form of tax increase as part of a deficit reduction deal being negotiated with Democrats, veteran Sen. John McCain, R-Arizona, said Sunday.
“The principle of not raising taxes is something that we campaigned on last November and the results of the election was the Tea Party people don’t want their taxes raised and they wanted us to cut spending,” McCain said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “They don’t want compromise.”
Well, okay. I substituted “Tea Party” for “American people” in the above quotes to make McCain’s claim accurate. Because polling shows that 55% of Americans want a compromise and poll after poll after poll shows the majority of Americans favor tax increases to deal with the deficit.
So, it’s pretty much the opposite of what McCain said.
But the problem isn’t that McCain is lying. It’s what he does. The problem is that there will be no correction about this from CNN, there will be no sanction of McCain by the network for willfully misrepresenting the facts, no demand that he correct the record — and next week, this clown will be back peddling more lies.
