Boulder Colorado is fighting back against “Corporate Personhood!” YOU SHOULD TOO!

We, THE PEOPLE, need to amendment the U.S. Constitution so that it says clearly, and unequivocally, that Rights recognized under the U.S. Constitution belong to human beings, only, not to artificial entities such as Corporations.

The five radical, ultra-conservative, activist, Justices on the current U.S. Supreme Court, have hijacked our “small d” democracy, and are stripping us of our God-given Right to self-government. In its now-infamous Citizens United decision, the Court said that a Corporation’s right to free speech, trumps the rights of the People, to pass meaningful campaign finance reform. Now, those same five radical Justices have said – in McComish v. Bennett and Arizona Free Enterprise Club’s Freedom Club PAC v. Bennett– that the State of Arizona was impermissibly trying to “level the playing field” with its publicly financed election system – which, importantly, was passed as a ballot initiative by the People of Arizona!

Do you get that?!  The People were trying to “level the political playing field” – so that candidates who are NOT independently wealthy, or who are NOT supported by unlimited corporate campaign donations, can compete in elections – and the Supreme Court said “NO! We like things just the way they are – tilted in favor of the rich and powerful.”

With these rulings, the Supreme Court has was clearly demonstrated that the “rights” of Corporations to dominate, and corrupt, our elections, are more important that the Rights of We, the People, to free and fair elections!

The only way to end this outrage, is to amend the Constitution . . . and the only way to amend the Constitution is to show that there is overwhelming public support for it.  That is where the citizen’s of Boulder, Colorado, and two  members of the Boulder City Council – Macon Cowles and Crystal Grey – come in.

The citizens of Boulder, including the tireless activists at Boulder Move to Amend (this is truly a “people’s movement, and Boulder MTA is leading the way!) and the Boulder County Democratic Party, are calling on the Boulder City Council to put a question calling for support for a federal constitutional amendment, on the Boulder municipal ballot, this fall.  Mr. Cowles and Ms. Grey have agreed to support that ballot initiative.  If they are successful, the good people of Boulder will be able to stand up and be counted on this most important issue in November.

Wouldn’t you just love to be able to stand up to Supreme Court Justices like Antonin Scalia, and Clarence Thomas, and say “Not only ‘no,’ but “HELL, NO!”   I know I would!!

Here is how YOU can get involved.  The next time the Boulder City Council is scheduled to take up this matter is July 19, 2011.  If you are anywhere near Boulder on that date, please take the time to join Boulder Move to Amend and the Boulder Democratic Party, for a Citizen’s Rally in support of the resolution on July 19th between 4:30 and 5:45 pm in front of the Municipal Building at Canyon and Broadway in Boulder.  After the rally, you can stay and show support for our speakers at the Open Comment period of the Council meeting.

If you are NOT in the Boulder area – please go to Move to Amend’s website ( and get involved with the MTA affiliate near you.  As Thom Hartmann says “Change begins with you . . . tag.  You’re it!”

Onward! Stephen A. Justino
