Very good news today: the coalition We Are Ohio has turned in 714,137 signatures, three times what is necessary, to put on the ballot in November a repeal of SB5, the anti-union law that restricts collective bargaining, mediation and the right to strike. SB5 passed in Ohio earlier this spring, but the citizen veto process in Ohio stops implementation, and puts the law up for a vote of the people. Polling shows it would win, and the fact that over 700,000 Ohioans signed a petition to repeal it shows the strength of the coalition.

Unlike in Wisconsin, Ohioans can really stop this assault on public employees and worker’s rights by vetoing the law. And this would be a rebuke of Gov. John Kasich, the unpopular Tea Party Governor.

The fight in the states is crucial to the future of labor and the progressive community. It’s good to see it get off to a healthy start.
