Weiner Not Resigning After Admitting to Sexting with Female Admirers
Anthony Weiner is holding a press conference now, where he admitted to tweeting a picture of his crotch to a female college student, something he called a joke. He said he lied about his Twitter account getting hacked after he accidentally publicly sent a message he meant to send privately. But while he apologized profusely to his wife and family, and while he took full responsibility for his actions, he said firmly that he would not resign from Congress.
“I have made terrible mistakes. I have not been honest with myself or my family,” Weiner said. He also apologized to both the media and Andrew Breitbart, who seized on the allegations last week when they came up. Weiner said that he has carried on multiple inappropriate relationships on social media and email, with around six women, over the past three years. Most were made before his marriage, though not all of them. He said he never met these women or had any physical relationship whatsoever. The relationships included the exchange of messages and pictures via Facebook, Twitter and email, and at some point even the phone. Allegations of phone sex and multiple other events cropped up in the past 24 hours.
“I treated it as a frivolous thing not acknowledging that it caused so much harm to so many people,” Weiner acknowledged, saying that he engaged in a series of dumb actions and then lied about it. Crying at times, Weiner said that he was deeply sorry for the pain this has caused his wife and family. “I’m ashamed of my terrible judgment and actions,” he said.
But he vowed to go on with his political career, saying that his constituents will make the final judgment. He said he would have to work hard to regain their trust in future elections. “I’m going to go back to work and … convince them that this was a personal failing, an aberration from which I have learned.”
Weiner thinks that nothing he did violated any law or the rules of the House.
It sounds like Weiner was addicted to sexting, and sent these messages and pics from some basement computer in his house. Whether or not that rises to the level of resignation is really up to him. Maybe he can bring in David Vitter and Larry Craig as character witnesses.
