News Flash: Obama Misquoted on Manning!
It has been reported, in a shameful display of mistranscription, that President Obama cavalierly dismissed concerns about the treatment of Bradley Manning when replying to a question at a press conference. However, the quote was not only reported inaccurately but taken egregiously out of context. Here is what the president actually said:
With respect to those who foolishly voted for me expecting change they could believe in, I have actually asked the veal pen whether or not the procedures that have been taken in terms of their confinement are appropriate and are meeting our basic standards. They assure me that they are. I can’t go into details about some of their concerns, but some of this has to do with their safety as well.
Once the record is set right and Obama has been correctly quoted, it’s obvious that he wasn’t callously whitewashing the outrageous treatment of a single, insignificant government employee—the sort of whistleblower he paid fulsome lip service to as a candidate—but rather speaking to the noble, uncompromising conduct of his entire administration.
