Kansas Republican Reveals Failsafe Method For Detecting “Illegals”

Today’s installment of Republicans Are Totally Not Racist At All Nope pays tribute to Kansas state rep. Connie O’Brien, who has zeroed in on a foolproof way to identify undocumented immigrants:

REP. O’BRIEN: My son who’s a Kansas resident, born here, raised here, didn’t qualify for any financial aid. Yet this girl was going to get financial aid. My son was kinda upset about it because he works and pays for his own schooling and his books and everything and he didn’t think that was fair. We didn’t ask the girl what nationality she was, we didn’t think that was proper. But we could tell by looking at her that she was not originally from this country. […]

REP. GATEWOOD: Can you expand on how you could tell that they were illegal?

REP. O’BRIEN: Well she wasn’t black, she wasn’t Asian, and she had the olive complexion.

Now, there is some additional context here: the young woman in question did not have any kind of ID or driver’s license, although as one of the other state reps pointed out, she couldn’t get financial aid in the first place if she wasn’t here legally.  And when Mr. Gatewood asked Ms. O’Brien how she could tell the woman was “illegal,” she didn’t say anything about her lack of ID, she focused solely on her skin color.  (True, she did say that driving without a license was illegal, but I don’t think that was quite what Mr. Gatewood had in mind.)

So apparently if O’Brien had been in line next to a fair-skinned, black or Asian student with no ID or driver’s license, she would have just chalked it up to some kind of mix-up instead of seething with resentment about her son’s birthright being unfairly stolen away.  But hey, at least she didn’t think it would be “proper” to accost a total stranger and demand to see her papers, so three cheers for her saintly tolerance and restraint, right?

In other Totally Not Racist Republican news, 51% of likely GOP presidential primary voters don’t think Barack Obama was born in the United States, and another 21% aren’t sure.  Must be the complexion.
