Over the past two years, Barack Obama has pursued policies that reveal an almost obsequious fealty to business. He’s expanded the War on Terror and extended the Bush tax cuts, among other things.

Yet we’re still getting  ZOMG HE’S A SOCIALIST!!1! columns like this from Very Serious Conservatives like George Will.

Two years into Barack Obama’s presidency, we now know what he meant about “hope” and “change” – he and other progressives hope to change our national character. Three weeks into his presidency, Newsweek, unhinged by adoration of him and allowing its wishes to father its thoughts, announced that “we are all socialists now” and that America “is moving toward a modern European state.” The electorate emphatically disagreed and created the 112th Congress, with its exceptionally important agenda.

The notion that the 2010 midterms were decided by something Newsweek printed in 2009 is indeed rather clownish, but, just for kicks, here’s a key part of that Meacham column that Will omits.

The architect of this new era of big government? History has a sense of humor, for the man who laid the foundations for the world Obama now rules is George W. Bush, who moved to bail out the financial sector last autumn with $700 billion.

I wonder how many columns George Will wrote accusing of George W. Bush of hoping to “change our national character” while he presided over the biggest expansion of government since LBJ?
