South Korea: Not fucking around this time? If you want a longer assessment, wait about two hours and head to Danger Room, but note that the South Korean fire drill scheduled for either Monday or Tuesday on Yeonpyeong island will fire its artillery southwest, i.e., away from the petulant, bellicose north.

Newly appointed Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin has vowed to hit back hard in a counterstrike that would include air power if North Korea attacked again. Seoul has put its F-15K and KF-16 fighters on standby.

Obviously, no one wants war on the Korean peninsula, except North Korea. The drill will not threaten North Korea in any fashion. But the North has gotten away this year got away with killing 46 South Korean sailors and then busting off an artillery strike on Yeonpyeong around Thanksgiving. The South can’t just back down every time Pyonyang issues a tantrum. We’re right to stand by Seoul here.
