Sierra Club of Hawaii Endorses Homophobes for 2010 General Election

The Sierra Club of Hawaii endorsed major Hawaii homophobe and anti LGBT leader Hawaii State Senator Mike Gabbard and also his daughter, Tulsi Gabbard Tamayo, who was elected to the Honolulu City Council.

Senator Gabbard and daughter Tulsi were given the “Green Seal of Approval.”

I understand the Sierra Club’s focus on the environment and other “green” issues. I know both Gabbards are considered to be very good on “green” issues.

But Senator Mike Gabbard is infamous for his leadership of very successful but ugly and hateful campaign against gay marriage in Hawaii in the 1990s. You can read about the Gabbard family’s extreme opposition to equal rights for LGBT people in these articles: Honolulu Weekly, Jan 27, 1999, “The Gospel According to Mike Gabbard” and Honolulu Magazine, August 2004, “Who is Mike Gabbard?”

There is some information about Tulsi Gabbard Tamayo and her background here: Pam’s House Blend “Politics: Tulsi Gabbard Tamayo – Stealth Candidate in Hawaii?”

Hawaii State Senator Mike Gabbard and his wife, Carol, are also militantly anti Choice. Tulsi doesn’t have much of a record on LGBT issues, Civil Unions, or Choice, be we can expect her to be strongly against equal rights for LGBT people, against Civil Unions and anti Choice.

The Sierra Club of Hawaii did endorse some candidates who support Civil Unions including the winning candidate for Hawaii Governor, former U.S. Congressman Neil Abercombie.

I’m wondering if this kind of thing is happening elsewhere. Are “green groups” endorsing militantly anti LGBT candidates in your area?

I don’t see “green issues” and LGBT issues being mutually exclusive and I don’t see why we can’t agree in most areas. Their endorsement of Hawaii State Senator Mike Gabbard and his daughter, Tulsi Gabbard Tamayo, makes me wonder about the Sierra Club of Hawaii. It makes me wonder if they had blinders on.

Apparently the Sierra Club of Hawaii doesn’t have LGBT members who are in a position to influence their endorsements.

For information about intense religious activity in Hawaii during this election year, see: Pam’s House Blend “LGBT vs Religious Right in Hawaii: Some Big Wins, Some Defeats”

Since this article was written, Tulsi Gabbard Tamayo has changed her name back to Tulsi Gabbard. As of May 2012, Tulsi Gabbard is running for the U.S. House of Representatives for the Hawaii Second Congressional District. She says she now supports equal rights for LGBT people and supports a woman’s right to choose.
