Why Is the Washington Post Giving Respectful Treatment to a Disgraced and Debunked Racist Liar?

Charles-Murray

"To his credit, he hasn't burned a cross in years." -Jeet Heer

Will someone please explain to me why neocon nutjob Fred Hiatt thinks letting disgraced racist liar and failed scientist Charles “Bell Curve” Murray defecate all over the editorial section of Kaplan Test Prep’s Washington Post arm is a good idea? Please, someone help me out here. Why did Fred Hiatt let a known purveyor of racist crapola write approvingly of the racists of the GOP’s Tea Party?

Is there something in the WaPo watercoolers? Could be — after all, this was the paper that thought that anti-Muslim bigot and liar (and FOX News darling) Juan Williams’ having  made hells of the lives of fifty female Post staffers only rated a slap on the wrist that in no way hurt his future prospects or income levels. (In fact, Williams still has at least one defender at the Post, Eugene Robinson, a thirty-year WaPo veteran who was around when Williams was busted for harassing fifty female Post staffers yet somehow still respects him “as a journalist and author”.) And Fred Hiatt is the guy who recently OKed the singularly — up to now — embarrassing hate speech posing as an Op-Ed by right-wing bigot Dinesh D’Souza.

For those of you who weren’t around when this Murray jackass first hit the scene nearly two decades ago, he and his late co-author Richard Herrnstein, spurred with over a million in funding from conservative groups, wrote a book called The Bell Curve that was in essence one great big long and dishonest apologia for racism, one that right-wingers joyfully took and still take to their bosom despite its having been debunked six ways from sundown by every reputable biologist and social scientist. (The classic takedown is and remains Stephen Jay Gould’s New Yorker piece “Curveball“; in addition, Gould was so infuriated by the GOP/Media Complex’s rush to fawn over Murray et al that he wrote an extra chapter specifically eviscerating The Bell Curve for the 1990s reprint of his book The Mismeasure of Man.)

One would think that the same mass media that gleefully did the conservatives’ bidding to marginalize and demonize obscure people like Ward Churchill for having said some things they deemed naughty would have learned their lesson and avoided giving a cross-burner like Murray (yes, folks, Mister I’m Not A Racist Charles Murray is a cross-burner) the time of day, much less valuable space in a major American daily paper. But apparently, just as bigotry against Muslims and women is A-OK (just ask Juan Williams), now they deem it safe to try, yet again, to rehabilitate Charles Murray.

Somehow, I don’t think we’ll see any of the people reaming out NPR for something they should have done ages ago ever bothering to attack Fred Hiatt for allowing a known racist and fact-fudger posing as a legitimate scientist hold forth in the pages of the Washington Post. In fact, they very likely approve, whether or not they say so openly. And that disgusts me.
