Embedded Reporters Are Such Drones

Encountering one of these drones is a bewildering experience. I suggest reading Danger Room in the near future for more on the circumstances that got me this close to an instrument of war that looks like H.R. Geiger designed it. Behind me and to my left is the bay where the Hellfire missile goes.

I’m going to wait until I have a little more perspective — that is, after I leave Afghanistan — to write the post I’ve been trying to write about what it’s like to witness the operations of a remotely-piloted plane that can kill someone from 20,000 feet in the air while its operators watch on a computer monitor. All I’ll say for now is that it’s a profound thing to behold, the kind of event that seems to enlarge when reflecting upon it, and I didn’t even witness anything lethal.
