After all the hubbub about Rand Paul and Civil Rights, I am reminded by a friend of mine that those on the left who would wrongly label him a racist are just like the same people on the right who would attack him on his foreign policy ideas and his ideas on legalizing marijuana and opposing the patriot act. The fact is, let’s just be honest, there is no difference between the left and the right because they are using the same playbook to smear libertarians.

When the corporatist media attacked Paul as being a racist, even though he abhorred discrimination, this is a tactic that is pulled on the libertarians concerning government. The summary of the left’s attacks on libertarians is, if you genuinely have questions about what government is doing, you are a racist. The left does this all the time and I wish they would stop this but this too tempting for them.

While the left smears those who advocate constitutional government, there are those on the right who denigrate libertarians for genuinely opposing their interventionist foreign policy, the war on drugs and the war on terror. Oppose any of these things and you are immediately called unpatriotic. The right always seems to do this and they do get away with it, but at times they are rightly called out but that’s rare. So-called conservatives like David Frum and William Kristol have attacked anti-war conservatives like Robert Novak as being unpatriotic and have labeled 9/11 truthers as terrorists or being in bed with Al-Qaeda. Again, the right does this all the time and it should stop now.

In the end, it’s hard for us libertarians to make friends with either side without being attack for our positions. In my case, it’s actually easier since most of my progressive, anarchist, and conservative friends agree with me on the most important positions. For most libertarians, that is not as easy as it would sound for them. So let’s summarize what I have been arguing: if you oppose big government, the you are a racist. If you oppose our overseas empire, you are unpatriotic. If you oppose both, then you are an unpatriotic racist. I hope I made myself clear.

I am a libertarian who supported Ron Paul in the 2008 elections and I intend to support him in 2012. I am an open minded college student who has joined atheist, socialist, and feminist organizations to understand their message and to convey my message of liberty in an effective manner. I am up for debate but I always know when we can reach common ground. I live in West Texas and have lived here for my life. I love to listen to progressive metal like Dream Theater, thrash metal like Metallica and Pantera, but I love to eat all sorts of food that tickle my taste buds.
