IN-03: Mark Souder Resigning After Affair With Staffer

Mark Souder, an eight-term Republican incumbent, will resign from office today after details about an affair with a staffer have been revealed.

Eight-term Rep. Mark Souder will announce his resignation Tuesday after it came to light that he was conducting an affair with a female staffer who worked in his district office, Fox News has learned.

Multiple senior House sources indicated that the extent of the affair would have landed Souder before the House Ethics Committee.

Elected as a family values conservative as part of the Republican revolution in 1994, Souder survived a tough re-election challenge in 2008 and survived a contested primary two weeks ago.

This primary election occurred two weeks ago; Souder survived but now will have to be replaced on the ballot. There is no specific deadline for a special election to be held, so I imagine it’ll just get folded into the general election in November, though it’s possible it won’t.

Dr. Tom Hayhurst, the 2006 nominee in this Fort Wayne area district, will run again. This is probably a safe Republican seat, but because the resignation will take place after the primary, it leaves little time to mount a campaign.

As for Souder, he’s a – say it with me – family values Republican.

UPDATE: Souder and the staffer, Tracy Jackson, recorded this video supporting abstinence-only education in 2009. While they were having an affair.

I have a feeling this video will get more than the 400 views it has currently.
