A judge on Thursday granted a request to change the name and gender of the 41-year-old writer, activist and reality TV star.

I am old enough to remember Chaz’ first outing… as an infant, on the Sonny and Cher Show. I don’t recall when I first watched an interview with the adult LGBT advocate but I know that I was immediately impressed by his intelligence and eloquence. More recently I have been impressed by his courage in sharing with the public the very private matter of gender reassignment.

Congratulations, Mr. Bono and best wishes for a bright and happy future! Thank-you for helping us better understand a very difficult issue. I look forward to hearing your voice in the future as we endeavor to end discrimination against ALL Americans.
