Based on some reporting, Faisal Shahzad apparently was motivated by U.S. supported attacks on Western Pakistan.
If the reporting is accurate, his failed attempt in Times Square may in some ways echo Fenian Brotherhood attacks. Irish immigrants in the United States raided Canadian targets. The goal was to bring pressure on Britain to withdraw from Ireland.

As someone who has long opposed U.S. military action in the Middle East, I am not in the least bit surprised that "the chickens have come home to roost."
While I am not optimistic, I pray that both Republicans and Democrats will come to their senses, and move for a rapid and unilateral de-escalation on all fronts.
