After AZ Governor Jan Brewer passed SB 1070, President Obama attacked the bill as violating basic rules of fairness. However, there is something that everyone seems to miss when it comes to this debate we are having. President Obama and his allies argue that the Arizona law is violating the civil liberties of Americans by allowing police to pull you over if they think you are an illegal immigrant. However, these are the same people who either voted to expand the Patriot Act and other police state measures that have drastically cut down on our civil liberties.

How could anyone with a straight face attack SB 1070 and yet support the same police state tactics that are making us less free? Think about it, the Democrats are the same people who continually support the War on Drugs, an unconstitutional war that is one of the huge reasons for the border violence we are seeing unfold. These are the same Democrats who had a chance to repeal the Patriot Act, the Military Commissions Act, and other unconstitutional laws and yet did everything they could to extend the laws. These are the very same Democrats who are making it their policy to assassinate Americans without a warrant. Yes, Republicans are obviously guilty (except Ron Paul) for vehemently supporting these laws, but Democrats are the ones that are letting our police state continue on without change.

In the end, if you oppose the infringement of our civil liberties, then you have to be consistent because consistency clears up any questions that may be left. We cannot let the federal government or the state government violate our civil liberties for the sake of security, period. I will end this diary with a quote from Benjamin Franklin that everyone should hear and especially the two party duopoly:

They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

I am a libertarian who supported Ron Paul in the 2008 elections and I intend to support him in 2012. I am an open minded college student who has joined atheist, socialist, and feminist organizations to understand their message and to convey my message of liberty in an effective manner. I am up for debate but I always know when we can reach common ground. I live in West Texas and have lived here for my life. I love to listen to progressive metal like Dream Theater, thrash metal like Metallica and Pantera, but I love to eat all sorts of food that tickle my taste buds.
