Republican Consultant on GOP 2012 Presidential Field: “We Have Real [Expletive] Problems.”
Charlie Crist is yet another moderate not-wingnutty-as-Jim DeMint Republican to get eated by the Teabaggers (see also Bennett, Bob). And while this bloody purge may be emotionally satisfying to the Palinese Liberation Army*, it’s lousy politics — especially nationally.
Republicans’ ideological civil war, the recent passage of a controversial Arizona immigration law, and an uncertain shortlist of Obama challengers all raise questions about its ability to compete on a presidential level.
“From a presidential perspective, we have real [expletive] problems,” said one GOP operative based in Washington, D.C., who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the state of the party frankly. “From a national candidate perspective, we have real problems.”
The politics of the Quitter and DeMinted play really well in the Old Confederacy — not so much anywhere else. Meanwhile, the RedStaters are still convinced McSame lost because he was insufficiently wingnutty. Since the GOP base is on a mission to purge every Republican who doesn’t think Obama is a Kenyan Marxist, they’re going to have a hell of a time finding someone that threads all the needles.
Surely there’s another Bush around.
