History Repeats Itself: Immigration Once Again Rips the GOP Apart
Think back to 2004. The Bushies actually tried to do something about immigration reform, and unwittingly pitted their corporate overlords against their crazy xenophobic base. Minutemen groupies like the Anchor Baby screamed NO SHAMNESTY!!!! while the GOP bosses looked on in horror.
Well, it’s happening again with Arizona’s Show Me Your Papers Act.
Byron York loves the bill.
The bottom line is, it’s a good law, sensibly written and rigorously focused — no matter what the critics say.
I don’t think this is the proper approach.
The Quitter loves the bill.
“Governor Jan Brewer did what she had to do as the CEO of that state,” Palin said. “To help protect the citizens of her state she had to do what the federal government has refused to do, and that is help secure the border.”
I wished they hadn’t passed it.
Arizona’s law might give the nation information about whether judicious enforcement discourages illegality. If so, it is a worthwhile experiment in federalism.
George Will’s mancrush Marco Rubio hates it.
That’s not really something that Americans are comfortable with, the notion of a police state.
The bottom line is that some Republicans realize this is nativist crap that will screw them at the polls, since brown people are going to be in the majority very soon. They also know their biggest donors profit handsomely from all that cheap labor.
Others, even though they might be aware of those realities on some level, just can’t help themselves and simply love the idea of brown people getting picked up by cops for being brown.
This could be just what the doctor ordered for November. The Democrats should force the issue and drive the wedge in further. The Teabaggers don’t do “immigration reform.” They want their country back!
