Lt. Robin Chaurasiya wanted out, or did she?

Military branches regularly kick out known gay soldiers, but because Chaurasiya made her sexuality known and wanted to leave service (because, she said, she couldn't serve in the military that refused to serve her), she was denied an exit after Lt. Gen. Robert R. Allardice, Chaurasiya's commander at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois concluded she was faking her gayness (and her civil union) just to get out.

Except on Monday, the Air Force reversed its decision after Gen. Raymond E. Johns Jr., described as a “more senior officer,” looked into the case and recommended a discharge. Air Force Secretary Michael B. Donley, who has said it's time to repeal DADT, has the final say.

Yossarian looked at him soberly and tried another approach. “Is Orr crazy?”
“He sure is,” Doc Daneeka said.
“Can you ground him?”
“I sure can but first he has to ask me to. That's part of the rule.”
“Then why doesn't he ask you to?”
“Because he's crazy,” Doc Daneeka said. “He has to be crazy to keep flying combat missions after all the close calls he's had. Sure I can ground Orr. But first he has to ask me to.”
“That's all he has to do to be grounded?”
“That's all. Let him ask me.”
“And then you can ground him?” Yossarian asked.
“No, then I can't ground him.”
“You mean there's a catch?”
“Sure there is a catch,” Doc Daneeka replied. “Catch-22. Anyone who wants to get out of combat duty isn't really crazy.”

Catch-22 quotes

Is she, or isn't she?  Only her spouse knows for sure?  Why does it matter just how gay you are, whether it's to serve in the military or to play on a softball team ?

Under the military's “don't ask, don't tell” policy banning openly gay service members, getting out shouldn't be a problem.

Unless, that is, Air Force leaders believe her gay marriage is a farce — staged to make way for a quick exit from the service…

Chaurasiya, a communications officer assigned to 375th Air Mobility Wing, Scott Air Force Base, Ill., married her girlfriend Dec. 18 in New Hampshire, where gay marriage is legal. She said the marriage was a spur-of-the-moment decision, but that it was for love and not to defy Pentagon policy…

Question:  What, exactly, is it going to take to end a policy even Yossarian would have stared in awe at?

…Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn't, but if he was sane he had to fly them. If he flew them he was crazy and didn't have to; but if he didn't want to he was sane and had to. Yossarian was moved very deeply by the absolute simplicity of this clause of Catch-22 and let out a respectful whistle.

Answer: As you may know by now, it will take 15 votes on the Senate Armed Services Committee to get DADT repeal into law this year.  Here are those crucial votes.  They are handicapped according to their likliehood of supporting repeal. SP denotes sponsor, ++ on the record support, + positive indicator, etc… Please thank supporters too, who knows how many cons may be working the other side.
