Alan Grayson To Debate George W. Bush This Sunday
The above headline is 80% true.
Alan Grayson, the brash, populist first-term Congressman who has captured the hearts of progressives with his fearless broadsides at Republicans and the banking lobby, really will debate George W. Bush this Sunday in Los Angeles. I should know – I’m emceeing the event.
There’s one small catch – James Adomian, the comic and impersonator, will play the part of the 43rd President for the evening. The actual Mr. Bush couldn’t get the night off from that hardware store greeter job he picked up.
This unique low-dollar fundraiser, fairly unprecedented in the staid world of politics, matches Grayson with the LA alternative comedy circuit, and was the brainchild of Justin Krebs, the founder of Drinking Liberally, who has also promoted a series of liberal comedy shows across the country. Other comedians scheduled to appear at the fundraiser as of press time include Jimmy Dore (Comedy Central, Pacifica Radio), Andy Cobb (Funny or Die) and, um, me. In another lifetime, I was known to bring the funny to clubs and colleges around the nation (you don’t remember my epic performance at Wisecracker’s in the Radisson Hotel in Merrillville, Indiana?), and I’ll be very quietly and unobtrusively hosting the show on Sunday, at the M Bar in Hollywood. It starts at 6pm.
Grayson has used the Internet and events like this to bring in more money for his re-election campaign than anyone in the House of Representatives last quarter – and the quarter before. This is true despite taking no money from corporate PACs or lobbyists or anyone with business before his committees. He is proving that progressives will respond enthusiastically to a take-no-prisoners style, and he’s doing it from a so-called swing district.
I would be remiss if I didn’t give more details, but for now, if you are interested in attending you can email justin-dot-krebs-at-gmail-dot-com to RSVP and for more information. I’ll put the specifics on the flip:
