At the SLDN 18th Annual National Dinner I had a chance to interview Navy Personnel Officer Stuart O’Brien, who serves with the Australian Defence Forces (thanks to Blender Michael Bedwell, who brought him over to chat).
Australia’s ban on gays and lesbians openly serving in the military was lifted in 1992, so Stuart’s definitely someone who could speak to the Elaine Donnelly-level horrors that rose up in the wake of the ban.
Oh wait, there weren’t any. Sorry, Elaine.
President Obama and Congress, take note. The Prime Minister there just lifted the ban and nothing happened. Business went on as usual. Stop coddling the coots in the Pentagon who are more concerned about their personal “privates” because of their homophobia rather than keeping the best-qualified people in its ranks. The tough Aussies didn’t run screaming from the showers.
