The Israeli defense minister and ex-prime minister, expressing something that’s completely fucking obvious to even the venal folk who try to get you not to express it:

“The simple truth is, if there is one state” including Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, “it will have to be either binational or undemocratic. … if this bloc of millions of Palestinians cannot vote, that will be an apartheid state.”

Imagine: Ehud Barak believes in Jewish democracy in Israel. Will the Anti-Defamation League admonish Barak about how “Apartheid, that abhorrent and racist system in South Africa, has no bearing on Israeli policies”? (Thanks to TPM’s Justin Elliott for that one.)

Not that I have much faith here, but I hope we can act like adults from now on. A negotiated Israeli disengagement from the West Bank is the only just way to preserve Jewish democracy. Anyone offended by the prospect of an Apartheid Israel should react to Barak’s comments by strengthening the pressure on Netanyahu to finally get Israel out of the West Bank. No bullshit about Palestinian rejectionism. No bleating about Hamas rockets. Get. The fuck. Out. Of Palestine. Jewish democracy depends on it.
