It’s great to see a president busting malicious myths in real-time. As ThingComeUndone did in a comment on the previous diary in this series, using the LOTR characters, we need to ask, what myth is he making at the same time? Myth-making and myth-busting are transactional in nature: busting one myth implies another. Like TCU said, he keeps saying he couldn’t find a credible economist to support the GOP’s numbers, but then, over our loud and persistent protests, he goes and listens to the crew of economic hit men mentored by Robert Rubin who nuked the economy in the first place. And ain’t we got economists?

Glenn Greenwald has repeatedly made this point. Obama dumped Austan Goolsbee on the day he took office, and put in Larry Summers. He kept torture-enablers in the intelligence community, right at the top. Now we’re supposed to believe the bad guys of the Bush era have turned good overnight?

Soon, Obama is going to go to the C Street cult of power’s prayer breakfast. Will there be another Q&A? Will The Family’s prayer breakfast be televised? Will he also someday pray in a mosque? Sit in meditation at a Buddhist temple of any sect? HA! We obviously have a de facto state religion.

In belated reply to comments on the previous entry. Sorry I was away and missed all the fun.

I agree that the GOP believe their own myths. The important thing, in myth-making, is your intent. I suspect Obama will keep trying. I suspect he believes in the power of his eloquence. Even if he doesn’t truly believe it, he’s pulling the whole cosmos out from under the GOP’s myth-making and replacing it with his own. What’s the myth with which Obama makes sense of the world?

If your whole intent is to undermine, tear down, destroy your opponent, that shapes the talking points and strategies prior to their enactment. Then, by competing amongst themselves for the title of Hater-in-Chief, Supreme Demonizer of the Other, and by avoiding exposing their myths to reality checks, (remember, a myth is a way of seeing and being in the world, a way of explaining the comsos and our role in it; e.g., Newton’s mechanism is our Western scientific way of seeing things), maybe that’s how they end up in front of the president, on camera, making ridiculous assertions for the president to slam-dunk.

In that sense, they’re like any cultists who can only communicate within their tightly defined circle. But this patriarchal cult of kinetic power just so happens to be at the heart of our political economy. Again, myths aren’t the exact same things as lies. Myths are as indispensable to our psyches as a mother’s womb is to our bodies.

I dare say, if you look inside your worldview, if you look into that background, and describe that world, how it functions, and your role in it (esp. by listening to how you define yourself, in what terms you describe organic vs. mechanical things), what you will get is your own personal myth, your way of seeing and being in the world, in a narrative form that literally makes sense of your world and your actions.

Thanks again, everybody, I bow in all y’all’s virtual directions.
