The revelations about James O’Keefe and his arrest for his role in trying to bug Sen. Mary Landrieu’s New Orleans office keep on coming. First off, we’re learning a lot about his accomplices, all of whom were involved in various conservative campus organizations and wingnut welfare sinecures.

Joseph Basel ran a conservative publication at his college in Minnesota, using funds from a grant from the “Leadership Institute,” a training organization for young conservatives. Robert Flanagan is the son of the acting U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Louisiana, William Flanagan. He works for the Pelican Institute, a conservative organization in Louisiana which is located half a block from Landrieu’s office. Stan Dai is another college conservative from George Washington University who has worked with all kinds of conservative organizations, including Cliff May’s Foundation for the Defense of the Democracies and the Young America’s Foundation. He’s part of a strange organization called the Intelligence Community Center of Academic Excellence which reportedly “prepares students for careers in intelligence.” And he wrote in college a really bad parody of the Vagina Monologues.

My Angry Penis

MY PENIS IS ANGRY!!!!!!! You want to know what happened to my penis? Joan happened to my penis! There I was, sleeping peacefully when Joan stormed in and dragged me out for “an educational program.” I thought was going to see Mr. Rogers! But nooooooo! It turned out to be the “Whine-gina Monologues!”

He’s apparently as good a comedian as he is a spy. Justin Elliott has a lot more on the college conservatives involved here.

As for O’Keefe, we’ve learned that he was on the payroll of Andrew Breitbart’s Big Government website. And we’ve further found the actual listening device, in a car a couple blocks from Landrieu’s office, that the Tea Buggers were trying to install.

Democrats in Louisiana are certainly trying to capitalize on this, calling it Louisiana’s Watergate. At the same time, conservatives, who at one point put forward a Congressional resolution honoring O’Keefe for his investigative work, are disassociating themselves as fast as they can.

There is no way this ends quietly. The money trail has only begun to be established, and the FBI will presumably try to flip one of the four Tea Buggers to try and glean more information.

Stay tuned.
