The Houston Chronicle has declared City Controller Annise Parker the winner of race for mayor of Houston, the country's fourth largest city. http://blogs.chron.com/houstonpolitics/ Parker had to overcome a vicious anti-gay campaign by supporters of former City Attorney Gene Locke to win the election. 

 As a native of Houston now living in NC, I can feel pride when I return to visit family. Now, if only outgoing Mayor Bill White can unseat Rick “let's secede from the union” Perry for governor next year, we can really see some progressive attitudes from the Lone Star State. 

Sure wish Molly Ivins was still around to see this! Wherever she is, I'm sure she's having a huge guffaw!
