I don’t want to be an asshole about this, but I see that the New America Foundation is holding a symposium on Monday about the “Obama Doctrine.” The question at stake for panelists Peter Beinart, David Sanger and Glenn Kessler is this:

A year into his presidency, is there an Obama Doctrine–a distinctive vision that animates his administration’s strategy in the world? If so, where does it come from, and can it succeed?

If you put “Obama doctrine” into Google, guess what pops right up. I daresay that piece — while crying out for a follow-up, to be sure — predicts the Nobel speech pretty damn well.

So it might have been nice if New America had at least acknowledged that the piece exists. Maybe it doesn’t hold up! Maybe it’s crap! It’s not my place to say; it’s yours. But the piece does at least serve as a benchmark to evaluate the administration on this question. OK, enough whining.
