Coakley Wins Primary, Poised To Become Next MA Senator

In an unsurprising finish, Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley coasted to victory last night, defeating three challengers for the Democratic nomination to the US Senate seat held by the late Ted Kennedy. She will face Republican state Senator Scott Brown in a general election matchup where she is expected to win easily. Four times as many Democrats voted yesterday as Republicans. The special election is January 19.

Coakley took 47% of the vote last night, followed by Rep. Michael Capuano with 28%, City Year founder Alan Khazei with 13% and Boston Celtics co-owner Stephen Pagliuca with 12%.

This race basically ended the day that Coakley took a strong stand against the Stupak amendment, saying she wouldn’t vote for a bill with such a restrictive abortion statute, and Capuano started out opposing that stand and had to flip within 24 hours.
