I recommend this video for anyone desiring a detailed and level-headed summary of the tragic inadequacies of the Senate and House health reform bills, as well as a realistic assessment of issues and challenges faced by the single-payer movement.
Michael Lighty is Director of Public Policy for the California Nurses Association/National Nurses Organizing Committee (CNA/NNOC). He spoke at last week’s Annual Conference of Healthcare-Now! in St. Louis.
The embedded video above is part 1 of 5. Here are links to the rest:
The full set of videos, resources, and minutes from the conference can be found here.
Healthcare-Now! is probably the hardest-core of the four principal organizations forming the Leadership Conference for Guaranteed Healthcare. Even so, I would encourage anyone given to dismissing SP activists as single-payer-or-nothingers, or cultists, or purity trolls, to browse some of the other videos from this conference and see if there’s anyone there you really want to consider an enemy or a fool deserving derision.
FYI, of those four organizations, only HC-N! currently supports (based on a vote at the conference) killing the health reform bills outright. Progressive Democrats of America and CNA/NNOC are reserving any such decision until the Conference bill emerges. Physicians for a National Health Program does not officially make recommendations on how legislators should vote, although it provides sharp assessments of legislation, and several of its prominent members (such as Drs Marcia Angell and Margaret Flowers) have gone on record as supporting killing the bills and starting over.
