Nevadans Celebrate Domestic Partner Law
(Las Vegas-September 30, 2008)
Thursday, October 1, 2009, Nevada’s Domestic Partner Registry Act takes effect and hundreds of same-sex couples will celebrate by receiving their Certificate of Domestic Partnership. According to the Nevada Secretary of State’s office, nearly 700 couples pre-registered their partnerships in the month-long pre-registration period ending September 24th in order to receive their certificates on October 1st when the law takes effect. Many more couples are expected to file their forms tomorrow.
“The response to the pre-registration period offered by Secretary of State Ross Miller has been phenomenal. We expected the response to be great since 27 couples registered in one night at The Center, but this response shows just how necessary and welcome this monumental legislation truly is,” said Tod Story, Center Board Member.“For GLBT couples, this opportunity represents the equalizing effect that state recognition offers for our relationships. We now enjoy many of the same rights and responsibilities in Nevada that opposite-sex couples enjoy when they choose to marry and share their lives together.”
The Center has been sponsoring multiple workshops to educate couples about their rights and responsibilities under the law-with hundreds of couples attending the seminars to be better informed about their choices and obligations.
Information about the filing process and forms can be found here: http://sos.state.nv.us/licensi…
***Interviews with couples who filed their Domestic Partner Registry forms can be arranged.***
