DC Trans Woman Killed; Another Hospitalized In Attack

From the Washington Post‘s Hate Motive Probed in Stabbing of 2 Transgender People:

Two transgender people who were stabbed Wednesday, one fatally, in Northwest Washington might have been victims of a hate crime, D.C. police said, although investigators have not yet determined what led to the violence.

The victims, one of whom suffered lacerations that were not considered life-threatening, were found bleeding in the 200 block of Q Street shortly after 2:30 p.m. The incident is being investigated as a potential hate crime based on “a shred of information” that detectives obtained from the survivor, according to acting Lt. Brett Parsons, the department’s top liaison to the city’s gay community.

The surviving victim told a detective that the attacker might have used an anti-gay epithet during the incident, Parsons said. But it would be “extremely premature” for authorities to definitively classify the crime as having been motivated by the victims’ gender identity, he added…

From the local Fox affiliate in Washington D.C.:

A candlelight vigil for this is in the works; I was forwarded this email by my friend Allyson Robinson:

I am sure most of you have heard of the double stabbing that happened on last night here in NW DC near the offices of T.H.E. One young lady only 21 years old, a client of T.H.E‘s and HIPS Joshua Mack known to us a “Na Na Boo” was killed. In response to this attack T.H.E. is in the process of organizing a candlelight vigil to be held tomorrow [August 28, 2009] night at 6:30pm at the site of the incident 209 Q ST NW. We are asking that all community members come out to show their support and condemn this recent violence and urge the community to come forward with any leads. The police are offering a $25,000 reward in this case. Please spread the word. Thank you

If I lived nearer to D.C., I know I would be at this vigil.
