I haven’t seen a better movie this year, nor have I seen a harder movie to watch. So much of Kathryn Bigelow’s Iraq film forces you to pray that each scene with the main characters — an EOD team in Baghdad in 2004 — won’t be their last. The scene with the contractors and with the Beckham character (you’ll know the particular one I mean when you see the film) come extremely close to capturing some of the unique horrors of this war, insofar as a parachuting-in reporter like myself can perceive them. It was all I could do to take the bus home with my friends and not peel off to walk home in the night, running the film through my head and making myself more and more upset.
